Why choose pre-professional studies in music teaching at Geneseo?

This minor is designed for students interested in advanced or professional study in music education. Students must be enrolled in the BA in Music (Performance) and must pass proficiency exams in keyboard, solfege, aural skills, and written theory.

Piano Pedagogy

Why study piano pedagogy at Geneseo?

The piano pedagogy minor is offered to students who attend private piano lessons and exhibit independence, responsibility, and growth in their musical and technical proficiency. In addition to coursework, students observe piano class sessions, study the piano class textbook and exercises, and serve as piano class assistants. They also provide tutoring sessions and advice on practicing strategies, scales and arpeggios, and memorization practices.

Music Conducting

Why study music conducting at Geneseo?

The music conducting minor is a pre-professional program that includes courses in choral and instrumental conducting at the beginning and advanced levels. Baton and rehearsal techniques, score preparation, and musical interpretation are stressed. Participating in the departmental ensembles and helping them prepare for public performances also play an essential role.

Students interested in the minor should first apply to the on their primary instrument or voice (see Audition Information for the Music BA: Performance Track for more information).

Music Composition

Why study music composition at Geneseo?

This minor introduces students to the necessary skills for writing music, ranging from a variety of approaches to harmony—classical to contemporary—to the foundations of music technology, techniques of orchestration, and more. Coursework consists of a combination of private lessons, seminars, and lectures as students explore and develop their own compositional style. Over the course of the minor, students compose a portfolio of original works leading to a senior capstone.

Music Business, Recording, and Production

Why study music business, recording, and production at Geneseo?

When we watch films, listen to music, and play video games, it is often easy to overlook all the people and labor behind the scenes, such as a sound engineer, a podcast editor, or a lawyer. This minor gives students hands-on experience with drafting business plans as well as recording, producing, and scoring.
